Canada could be set to join the Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria in 2027, after the country was granted a full European Broadcasting Union (EBU) membership.
On 25 June, the EBU voted at their 96th General Assembly in Prague to grant the North American country full membership.
Canada had been an Associate Member since 1950, with broadcasters CBC and Radio-Canada having collaborated with European broadcasters. Now, as full members, they will have access to the complete breadth of EBU collaboration, the EBU announced.
As full members of the EBU, Canada are now eligible to to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest – despite the fact they are not in Europe.
The CBC has not yet announced whether they plan to join the contest next year, which will take place in Bulgaria after Dara won with “Bangaranga” this year.

However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously expressed he would like the country to take part.
Carney suggested the idea during 2025 budget plans, which included $150million in funding for CBC. There had also been plans for a Canada edition of Eurovision in 2022, though it failed to materialise.
Of course, while the country hasn’t participated before, they have had some Eurovision representation.
None other than Celine Dion represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988, with the song “Ne partez pas sans moi” – and won.
And if Canada does take part in 2027, there are some huge stars they could (probably wouldn’t, but we can dream) ask to represent them.
Canadian mega stars of music include The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tate McRae, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain.
