Rylan Clark apologised after getting stranded in Nice, France and missing his BBC Radio 2 Saturday show, later calling the situation “so unprofessional” in a social media exchange.
The 37-year-old explained what happened during a phone-in to Emma Willis’ Radio 2 show, after he failed to make it back in time for his slot. Rylan said he had heading to the airport for an early flight home, only for plans to collapse at the last minute.
“I was flying back very early this morning. Went to the airport, and it was like, ‘No!’ And I was like, ‘Sorry?’” he said.
Rylan also said he briefly considered a rail alternative, despite knowing it still would not get him to the studio on time.
“At one point I was going to get on an eight-hour train, which still would have made me late for work, but would have got me home today,” he said.
He also admitted trying to get on a different flight by playing the “so you know who I am?” card.
What happened to his Radio 2 slot
Rylan’s three-hour show, Rylan On Saturday, airs weekly from 3pm to 6pm, and he has held the Saturday afternoon slot since 2019. With Rylan unable to return from France, Mark Goodier covered the programme.
Rylan later posted an Instagram Story apology, writing: “Soz about today’s show. I blame everyone but myself. Genuinely had it all sussed out and then flights all cancelled. Thanks Mark for stepping in you legend. Gonna have a rosé and think of you all.”
Rylan’s TV career and public candour
Rylan first broke through on The X Factor and went on to become a staple of British light entertainment, including hosting Big Brother spin-off shows such as Bit on the Side.
He has spoken publicly about mental health struggles following his divorce, including when he was asked about cheating on his ex-husband on ITV show The Assembly.
