British LGBTQ+ sitcom Smoggie Queens is strutting into season 3 after the BBC confirmed the show has been recommissioned.
The show’s second season arrived earlier this year alongside the release of the spin-off series The Dickie Show.
The show is from writer, creator, and star Phil Dunning and is set in Middlesbrough. The sitcom follows the chosen family and the lives of a friendship group composed of queer people, allies and drag queens.
Smoggie Queens fan-favourite characters Dickie (Phil Dunning), Mam (Mark Benton), Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), Sal (Patsy Lowe), and Stewart (Elijah Young) are all set to return. Additional casting is set to be announced soon.
The first and second series featured a number of cameos, including RuPaul’s Drag Race UK icon Michelle Visage. Ted Lasso star Bill Fellows, Steph’s Packed Lunch host Steph McGovern, and Peaky Blinders actress Charlotte Riley also made appearances. The third season is set to feature more familiar faces.
Speaking exclusively to PinkNews earlier this year, Young praised Dunning’s writing on the show. He said: “What I love about Phil’s sense of humour and how he writes comedy is that he’ll write the joke, but then he’ll take it a step further where it almost enters into ridiculousness.

“In the show, what’s so lovely is, you’re presented with an ordinary place like Middlesbrough, and presented with these really extraordinary characters.
“Phil’s writing is really clever and all of the sensitive, heartfelt moments are very quickly undercut with the gags or a moment of Dickie saying an insult to Stewart. It’s so much fun.”
With the announcement of a third series, Dunning shared: “So buzzing to be recommissioned for series 3! Thank you BBC! Going to have a cheeky Bloody Mam to celebrate.”

Gregor Sharp, Commissioning Editor for the BBC, says: “The fact that Smoggie Queens is returning for a third series is testament to the brilliance of Phil Dunning and the entire creative team behind it.
“The show has carved out a unique place in British comedy with its unforgettable characters, razor-sharp humour and huge heart.
“The show continues to celebrate the people and spirit of Teesside with warmth, wit and authenticity, and we can’t wait to see what chaos the Smoggie Queens get themselves into next.”
Chris Jones, Series Producer of Hat Trick Productions says: “I’m thrilled that the BBC is giving us another series. Phil and I love making this show so much, and the collaboration, care and creativity that every department brings to it is truly special.
“I can’t wait for us all to get back to the Boro and make another mad series!”
The first and second series of Smoggie Queens are available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three now.
