Elon Musk brands Anne Hathaway ‘marionette’ over resurfaced LGBTQ+ speech

Elon Musk has branded Anne Hathaway a “marionette” over a resurfaced 2018 speech in support of gay and transgender rights.

The clip, from Hathaway’s appearance at the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner in September 2018, went viral again this week, prompting a wave of criticism from Musk and other conservative figures.

In the speech, Hathaway spoke about privilege and identity.

“With the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current centre of a damaging and widely accepted myth,” she said.

“That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness. And it is a myth that keeps money and power in the hands of a few, instead of being invested in the lives of the free.”

Musk, responding to a critic’s post on X, wrote: “She’s just a marionette. Whoever wrote her speech is the real d***** bag.”

In a separate post, he added: “She’s just reading the script someone else wrote. No critical thinking is happening here at all.”

Musk also took a personal swipe at Hathaway, saying “she has a little bird brain”.

The billionaire, who has repeatedly railed against what he calls the “woke mind virus”, was joined by other conservative commentators including Fox News’ Tomi Lahren in attacking the speech.

Musk has become increasingly outspoken on LGBTQ+ issues since becoming estranged from his daughter, Vivian Wilson, who is trans and has publicly cut ties with him.
