Gay Olympian Gus Kenworthy now has a ring to go with his silver medal – he and his boyfriend Andrew Rigby are engaged.
The couple, who exclusively shared their engagement story with People on 5 August, have been together since 2024.
Four-time Olympic freestyle skier Kenworthy whisked Rigby, a finance executive, away for a getaway off the coast of Mallorca and got down on one knee on 4 August for a romantic Mediterranean proposal.
“We took a private dinghy from the pier at the St Regis where we were having a cocktail by the beach at the Mar Sea Club. I told Andrew I was taking him on a little adventure. Once we got to the island we climbed off the dinghy and hiked up to the top of the cliffs,” Kenworthy told People.
“I organized for a picnic blanket to be waiting for us with a pitcher of margaritas – extra sweet because that’s how Andrew orders them. After the proposal, we got back on the dinghy – but instead of going back to the mainland, it took us out to a chartered boat.”
He added that six of their friends were in on it, waiting to surprise them to celebrate with the newly-engaged couple.

The couple’s first meeting
Kenworthy and Rigby met almost a decade ago in Sydney while the skier was there for a speaking engagement. Their interaction was short and sweet, but they “properly” met years later at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2024.
Starting up a romance, the pair had a long distance relationship between LA and Sydney for a year before they moved to New York together.
Rigby shared with People that he had no idea Kenworthy was going to propose on their trip.
“We’ve talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation. To say I was shocked was an understatement. And then to see our friends there immediately after Gus proposed? Wow,” he said.
