Angelina Jolie’s brother James Haven comes out as gay

James Haven, the brother of Angelina Jolie, has come out as gay.

The filmmaker, 53, the son of actor Jon Voight, made the announcement during a live conversation on his ex-wife Romi Imbelli’s Substack. The pair married in 2024 but separated just days later, and have remained close since.

During the livestream, Haven read a letter reflecting on the years he spent hiding who he was.

“When I was a little boy, I was absolutely obsessed with the Disney princesses. I would sneak glitter onto my cheeks, swipe mascara onto my lashes, and for those moments, I felt like magic,” he wrote, adding that he “didn’t have the language back then to explain why”.

He described learning to suppress that part of himself: “Like so many gay kids, I learned to question parts of myself long before I learned to celebrate them.”

“That little boy with glitter on his face and mascara on his lashes was never confused, broken, or something to be ashamed of. He was simply gay. He was joyful. He was brave before he even knew it.”

Ex-wife Imbelli, who appeared on the Showtime reality series The Real L Word, shared a tribute to Haven on Instagram: “I wasn’t here to out someone I love. I was here to help set someone free,” she wrote. “In return, he set me free.”
