George Takei has celebrated his 18th wedding anniversary with his husband, reflecting on the decades they spent together before they could legally marry as “husband & husband”.
In a Threads post on 14 September 2026, the Star Trek actor wrote: “Brad and I are celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary today, September 14, 2026, in New York City,” alongside a photo of the couple.
Takei also shared details of their wedding day, writing: “Brad and I were married on Sept 14, 2008, at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
“We have been together for 40 years, but we couldn’t get married legally as ‘husband & husband’ until 2008, thanks to a ruling by the California Supreme Court that found the state ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.”

Takei said he and Brad married on 14 September 2008 at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
Brad also reshared the anniversary message on social media, writing that they were celebrating in New York City and adding: “40 years together, 18 married”.
Takei is best known as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, and has long used his public platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, including marriage rights. He is also a Japanese American public figure who has spoken widely about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during the Second World War and its impact on his family.
Wil Wheaton and Mark Hamill send congratulations
The couple’s anniversary prompted messages from fellow sci-fi favourites.
Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation, congratulated them with the message: “Happy anniversary, you guys! Love to you both.”
Mark Hamill also offered his congratulations on Bluesky.
Takei has previously spoken about how marriage politics in California shaped his decision to come out publicly, including when he said he came out “in fury” after Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected bills that would have legalised gay marriage, at a time when he had already been with Brad Altman for 18 years.
