Mean Girls’ Amanda Seyfried admits she passed on show over too many sex scenes

Amanda Seyfried said she recently turned down a TV series because it would have required frequent sex scenes, explaining she is not comfortable doing nude scenes with someone she doesn’t know right now.

The 40-year-old actor made the comments during a Hamptons International Film Festival panel hosted by Alec Baldwin on 4 October.

“I passed on a show where I would have to have sex all the time because of the sex,” Seyfried said, as per Deadline. “Doesn’t matter [who it’s with] … I don’t wanna do it. I’m uncomfortable with it. I’m not into it right now.”

She added that her feelings could change later on. “Maybe if [the project] came along again [at a later point], maybe I’d be in a different space. But I don’t wanna deal with being naked with a stranger,” she said.

Amanda Seyfried says sex scenes feel ‘weirder’ with age

Seyfried also reflected on what intimacy scenes can demand of performers.

“Our jobs are weird,” she said. “And as I get older, it gets weirder. We have to be romantic with people that we’re not romantic with.”

She described how something that once felt like a fun part of the job can become uncomfortable, depending on where you are in life.

How motherhood changed her boundaries

Seyfried said having children has made her more open to setting boundaries and say “no”, both professionally and in public.

“I have kids now who are paying attention to what I do, and so I have to be less of a pushover,” she said, sharing an anecdote about refusing photo requests while out with her daughter, Nina.

After Seyfried told a stranger she wouldn’t take a photo with them, she recalled Nina’s response: “I’m very proud of you, mama.”

Seyfried said her rule now is: “[If] I’m with my kids, I say no … whatever [they are] going through is more important than what I’m going through.”

Seyfried broke out on US soap opera All My Children before becoming widely known for Mean Girls and the Mamma Mia! films, and won an Emmy for portraying Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. She has also spoken over the years about the pressures of sexualisation in Hollywood, including in roles such as Linda Lovelace in Lovelace.

Last year, she appeared in The Housemaid, alongside Sydney Sweeney, who had full nude and sex scenes.

Sweeney later spoke about the double standard around nude scenes and said it affected how seriously some people took her work.
