New York governor David Paterson, a strong gay rights ally, has confirmed he plans to run for re-election in 2010.

Speaking on Meet the Press yesterday, Paterson acknowledged that the White House had “concerns” about him running again due to his low approval ratings.

However, he added: ā€œIā€™m running for governor of the state of New York.

ā€œYou donā€™t give up. You donā€™t give up because you have low poll numbers. You donā€™t give up because everybodyā€™s telling you what the future is. If everyone knew what the future is, why didnā€™t they tell me I was going to become governor? I could have used the heads up.ā€

Paterson has been a strong advocate for gay equality. He became governor in March 2008 after Eliot Spitzer resigned in the wake of a prostitution scandal.
