However, rather than express embarrassment or deny the pics, Hardy says he has no regrets about them – which show the actor posing in his “tighty-whitey budgie smugglers” – describing them as “a man in his natural habitat”.

Speaking to Sky News about the pictures – which were taken over eight years ago – the former Batman baddie said: “I’ve got no shame about my MySpace photos, especially the one of me in my underpants, which is a glorious photo of a man in his natural habitat. In my tighty-whitey budgie smugglers.”

“In America, they say, ‘You should be ashamed of this’ but I’m actually not remotely ashamed – that is me in my natural habitat, thank you.”

Hardy – whose has gained many fans on social media recently, due to his quirky, candid behaviour – added: “I might not be an Adonis, but I like to think of myself as an Adonis in that photo.”

In new biopic Legend, the actor plays both Ronnie and Reggie Kray – who rose to a surreal fame from the 1960s through their links with organised crime.

The pair’s sexuality has been the source of much speculation. Ronnie Kray spoke on various occasions of being gay or bisexual – but there was speculation that in fact both twins had romances with men, and they are often noted as part of LGBT history.

However, despite the pair’s status, the actor said he didn’t even consider the pair’s sexualities while making the film.

“Do you know what? I didn’t even think about [sexuality]. I don’t think it needs playing, that’s that. Ronnie was gay, does that make sense?”

The Inception actor has also revealed he had relationships with men when he was younger.

The star – who is married to British actress Charlotte Riley – said he had finished “experimenting” but still enjoyed close friendships with men.

When asked whether he had slept with men, he replied: “As a boy? Of course I have. I’m an actor for ****’s sake.

“I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me.

“I’m done experimenting but there’s plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life.

“A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine.”
