Republican Lindsey Graham wants gay people to team up with Kim Davis to fight ISIS
Republican Lindsey Graham says that gay people shouldn’t be concerned about Kim Davis – because everyone should be working together to stop Islamic State.
The South Carolina Senator and Presidential wannabe was asked about anti-gay Kentucky clerk Kim Davis in last night’s Presidential debate.
Davis, the clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, was briefly jailed for contempt of court, after ignoring direct orders to allow same-sex couples to marry.
However, Senator Graham – who is straight – said he he is more concerned about ISIS than discrimination against gay people.
When asked about Kim Davis, he said: “Here’s the one thing I want to tell you… whether you’re the wedding cake baker or the gay couple or the Baptist preacher, radical Islam would kill you all if they could.
“Let’s don’t lose sight of the big picture here. Kim Davis… I’m not worried about her attacking me. I am worried about radical Islamic terrorists who are already here planning another 9/11.
“We’re at war, folks. I’m not fighting a crime. I want to have a legal system that understands the difference between fighting a war and fighting a crime, and here’s the reality.
“Young men from the Mid- East are different than Kim Davis. And we’ve got to understand that.”
Of same-sex marriage, he said: “I don’t agree with [the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage], but that is the law of the land.
“As President, what I want make sure of is that everybody in this room, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, whatever religion that you can practice your faith without government interference, you can marry people consistent with the tenets of your faith.
“That’s the number one obligation of my presidency, to protect religious people when they exercise their religious rights, but this decision is the law as it is of right now.”
Graham – who has never been married and has no children – has consistently denied rumours about his sexuality, after being branded “ambiguously gay” by a political opponent last year.
The Republican, a strong opponent of LGBT rights, has claimed he would rotate the position of First Lady between his friends and family members if he becomes President.
Responding to rumours about his sexuality on another occasion, Graham joked about whether he was having a secret affair with Ricky Martin.
He joked: “Maybe I’m having a clandestine affair with Ricky Martin. I know it’s really gonna upset a lot of gay men — I’m sure hundreds of ’em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge — but I ain’t available. I ain’t gay. Sorry.”
Mr Graham is running on a platform of military experience – but appeared unaware that trans people were still banned from service when questioned about the issue.
