Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor dedicates award to trans people everywhere

Transparent won big at the Screen Actors Guild awards last night – with star Jeffrey Tambor winning the gong for best actor.

The esteemed actor plays transgender woman Maura Pfefferman on the Amazon show, as she transitions later in life and deals with her large family.

At the SAG Awards in LA last night, Tambor took home the award for Actor for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.

He dedicated his win to the everyday trans women and men who are often not as lucky as his character.

He said: “I’d just like to dedicate this award to the non-Maura Pfeffermans, who don’t have a lot of cash, for their operations, for their medicine, for their freedom.”

Speaking to reporters, Tambor revealed why he chose to make the dedication.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he said: “I’ve gotten letters from people telling me how [Transparent] has helped them in their freedom and taking their authenticity and through some very, very hard times.

“I wanted to especially reach out to the people who are not Maura Pfefferman and don’t shop in the mall, things like that, and people who are really scraping by to get their freedom and their medicine and hormone shots and surgeries.

“It’s not a red carpet thing; it’s a people thing. Al Pacino said it in And Justice For All: ‘They’re people, they’re people’.”
