Several dozen Kesha fans took to the streets of New York City on Friday to protest Sony Music to release her from her contract.

Kesha last month lost a court case to be released from the label with producer Dr Luke, who she alleges raped her.

The bisexual star filed her lawsuit against the producer, real name Lukasz Gottwald, back in 2014.

She alleges “mental manipulation, emotional abuse and sexual assault” against the producer, and says he has refused to allow her to record new music.

Around 40 fans took to the Sony building in New York City, including projecting the hashtag #FreeKesha on the front of the building.

Friday’s demonstration was the third protest in favour of releasing Kesha from the contract with Dr Luke’s imprint.

The fans chanted “Do the right thing”, “people over profits”, and held up signs reading: “Free Kesha now”.

They were there to deliver several petitions which have now been signed over 411,000 times.

“Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party,” Sony Music’s lawyer Scott A Edelman recently told the New York Times.

The star has found a lot of high profile support, as well as that of her fans, including from Kelly Clarkson, Lorde, Adele, Reese Witherspoon, JoJo and Ariana Grande.

Taylor Swift also donated $250,000, saying it was to help Kesha with “any of her financial needs during this trying time”.

Kesha came out as bisexual in 2013, and last September officiated her second same-sex wedding.

Last weekend she fought back tears as she accepted a Human Rights Campaign award for her LGBT rights advocacy.
