RuPaul wins first-ever Emmy
RuPaul Charles has picked up his first-ever Emmy.
The Drag Race host won the award for outstanding host of a reality competition in a star-filled awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday (September 11) night.
Facing off against American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Dancing with the Stars’ Tom Bergeron, Jane Lynch, Steve Harvey, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, the Logo TV star had previously said he “rather have an enema than an Emmy”.
Talking to reporters backstage, he said: “I really didn’t expect this.
“I came here thinking, I got invited to the prom and I’m going to dance my ass off tonight but I didn’t expect that I would have this in my hand while I was dancing.
“It’s a very special night not just for me but for all the young people around the world who dance to the beat of a different drummer.”
Having just finished the eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, this is the first time the drag superstar has been nominated and won.
In July, after nominations were announced, RuPaul dedicated the award to “outsiders everywhere”.
Having only been awarded since 2008, the best host award for a reality competition has gone to Jeff Probst four times, Jane Lynch twice and Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn once.
