LGBT+ fans disappointed as Netflix cancels One Day At A Time

LGBT+ fans of Netflix show One Day At A Time have voiced their disappointment after the streaming giant announced last night that it was cancelling the show.

One Day At A Time ran on Netflix for three seasons. During its run, Elena come out as a lesbian to her family, and the show also introduced non-binary character Syd in its second season.

The show has received much praise from LGBT+ fans for its representation of queer characters. It has been widely praised for its diversity and for tackling issues such as depression, PTSD and immigration.

Isabella Gomez, who plays Elena in One Day At A Time, posted a video online where she was visibly emotional, and said: “As you can imagine, we’re all very upset.

“I believe that we’re going to try to get it to another home and see if that works out, but if not – I’m not going to get emotional – we love you guys, and I got you.”

LGBT+ fans hope One Day At A Time will be picked up elsewhere

Since Netflix announced the cancellation on Twitter, the hashtag #SaveODAAT has been trending, with many fans hoping the show will be picked up by another company.

Gloria Calderón Kellett, showrunner on One Day At A Time, also expressed her disappointment, and said she hoped the show could be picked up elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Janine Brito, who is a writer on the show, tweeted: “As a Cuban Lesbian (Cubian? Lezacube?), I joined One Day At A Time already a huge fan. So this hurts not just from a professional standpoint but a personal one. Hence I’m out here like, ‘DO NOT TEST ME TODAY, STRAIGHTS.’”

LGBT+ fans took to Twitter to show their love for the show. One fan said they were “so sad” that the show had been cancelled, and added: “It also brought awareness to the LGBTQ+ community.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda: ‘We’re saving this show’

The show also got the support of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who shared a video of himself with Rita Moreno, who plays Lydia in One Day At A Time.

In the video, he said: “We’re saving this show,” with Moreno adding: “Of course we are, I need a new set of curtains.”

Justina Machado, who plays Penelope in the show, tweeted: “I’m so grateful to have played Penelope Alvarez. I don’t even know how to begin to express my gratitude to everyone. Truly, I am so honoured that we got to tell our stories. Yes it was a Latinx family but it was a universal story about family and love. An American Familia.”

One Day At A Time tells the story of veteran Cuban-American single mother Penelope Alvarez and her family, which is made up of her two children and mother, Lydia.

In its second season, Sheridan Pierce joined the cast as Syd, a non-binary teenager who starts dating Elena. The character’s romance with Elena is central to the season, culminating in them attending Homecoming together.
