It took just two days but James Charles has already caused his first scandal of 2020
If James Charles’ New Year’s resolution was to be controversy-free for 2020, it took him just 24 hours to fail it.
Piping hot scandal from Charles in under a day or your money back.
This time around, Twitter users are organising a #JamesCharlesIsOverParty after the make-up guru uploaded a video of him singing along to Saweetie’s ‘My Type’, which includes several uses of the N-word, on January 1.
So, what’s James Charles been accused of this time?
Charles was immediately caught in a crossfire of criticism, as people accused the 20-year-old of belting out the racist term.
Why is nobody talking about James Charles SAYING THE N WORD TWO TIMES IN A IG STORY. ? pic.twitter.com/oZy9oXX3IA

It’s safe to say that, for the most part, a number of people weren’t particularly surprised by this given Charles’ track record of *checks notes* joking about catching the ebola virus during a trip to “Africa”:
Every time James Charles gets cancelled again I have to post this pic.twitter.com/g3KdBnL0yM— Dragon Friendhug Hours (@Xyraezi) January 1, 2020
lmao congrats to james charles for being the 1st person to be cancelled this decade pic.twitter.com/S5yMks24I3— ًemily (@diorjwoos) January 1, 2020
apparently james charles said the n word .. but we already knew how james is, but y’all cancel him every other month and then still fw him a month later, and buy his shit. #jamescharlesisoverparty— ??????? (@parkyourjimins) January 1, 2020
Imagine how tired we are. Maybe hibernation isn’t a bad idea.
However, the cancel party divided Twitter, as users also defended the YouTuber:
umm now I know y’all hate James Charles for no reason cause he’s not that dumb to post himself saying the n-word, plus I watched it and didn’t see nor hear him say it #jamescharlesisnotoverparty

I was squinting real hard to see if James charles said the n word in that video and I’ve come to the conclusion that he didn’t say it??♀️ #jamescharlesisoverparty— doja cat’s wig (@itschristanaa11) January 2, 2020
I watched that video of James Charles like 15x yesterday and he really didn’t say the n word looool— w/ a dab of ranch (@StephGump) January 2, 2020
‘How stupid would I have to be to confidently record a video of me singing the N-word and still have it up the next morning?’
As backlash bubbled, Charles eventually took to Twitter to address his first scandal of the new decade.
After someone directly questioned him whether he said the phrase, he flatly denied the accusation and replied: “No?”
“Turn up the volume and listen,” he explained, “I skip over it.
“How stupid would I have to be to confidently record a video of me singing the N-word and still have it up the next morning?”
no? turn up the volume & listen, I skip over it. how stupid would I have to be to confidently record a video of me singing the n word and still have it up the next morning— James Charles (@jamescharles) January 1, 2020
While users wondered when the next #JamesCharlesIsOverParty will be, some noted other internet influencers have not faced similar condemnation for their actions:
Look I dislike James Charles as much as the next person, but he didn’t say the N word, you know who did though? Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, Rich Lux, Keemstar, just to name a few, so shut the fuck up already with your hypocritical asses and take a few fucking seats!!!— Lex (@notmybissbut) January 2, 2020
And others brought up that while the world debates whether or not Charles said the N-world, a part of the world is literally a burning hellscape and maybe we should talk about that:
Yall over here cancelling James Charles that he said the n-word (which he didn’t ) while Australia is fuckin burning, people get killed from the Australia’s fires, fire fighters are dying to stop the fire from spreading. Climate change is happening. Skies are literally red. pic.twitter.com/OXbUdQh7jt— maniac. (@grxzve) January 2, 2020
Instead of talking about James Charles saying something he didn’t even say let’s talk about the wildfires in Australia that are literally taking out entire suburbs— positiviᵗᵉᵃ (@TeaSpillYT) January 1, 2020
Points were made.
