Cara Delevingne says she identifies as pansexual: ‘Whether it’s they or he or she, I fall in love with the person’

Cara Delevingne has come out as pansexual, saying: “I fall in love with the person ā and that’s that.”
In an interview with Variety, as the magazine’s Pride issue cover star, the supermodel and Carnival Row actorĀ explained: “I always will remain, I think, pansexual.
“However one defines themselves, whether itās ‘they’ or ‘he’ or ‘she’, I fall in love with the person ā and thatās that. Iām attracted to the person.”
Delevingne also discussed her fluid relationship with gender, adding: “The thing is with me, I change a lot. I feel different all the time.
“Some days, I feel more womanly. Some days, I feel more like a man.”
Cara Delevingne had to deal with internalised homophobia.
She described her upbringing in “an old-fashioned, repressed English family”, which she said made accepting herself harder.
Delevingne said: “I used the word ‘gay’ to describe things which were s**t all the time: ‘Thatās so f**king gay of you, man.’
“Everyone used to talk about: ‘Oh, my God, imagine going down on a woman.’ Iād be like: ‘Thatās disgusting.’
“I think that came from the fact that I just didnāt want to admit who I was. I didnāt want to upset my family.
“I was deeply unhappy and depressed. When you donāt accept a part of yourself or love yourself, itās like youāre not there, almost.”

She said when she finally came out to her father at 18, after her first relationship with a woman ended, he took it better than she could have expected: “I remember one day, I was so upset because I was heartbroken… I screamed at him: ‘Iām f**king heartbroken.’
“I ran downstairs. I remember he gave me a hug, and I started crying so much. I said: ‘She broke my heart.’
“I thought at the moment, he might kick me out. I was that scared, I was honestly terrified.
“And he was like: ‘She isnāt worth the energy. You deserve to be loved’.”
On what Pride means to her, Delevingne said: “Pride to me is a sense of something that I never really had as a kid. A sense of pride is like a sense of belonging, a family outside your family, a place where you donāt have to apologise or feel ashamed.”
