Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried has offered an update on the status of a third movie in the series, describing it as a “done deal”.

The 2008 movie adaptation of the popular stage musical was a smash-hit and starred Seyfried alongside Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård and Dominic Cooper.

That was followed by 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, which acted as both a prequel and a sequel to the first film, jumping back and forth between time periods. Despite its inconsistencies with the first film, Here We Go Again! was also a box office success, drawing in $402million worldwide.

Ever since there has been enthusiasm for the story to continue further with both Streep and Seyfried offering updates previously. Mamma Mia! producer, Judy Craymer, also said in 2023 a script for a third film was in the “earliest stages” and she hoped Streep would return.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Governor Awards, Seyfried said she thought Mamma Mia! 3 was a “done deal”.

Going further to outline what she’d like to see in a third film the actress said: “I love portraying a mum, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids.”

Previously, Seyfried has supported the idea of Sabrina Carpenter playing Sophie’s daughter. At the end of Here We Go Again! Sophie gives birth to a baby boy, Donny.

Maybe recognising this point, Seyfried told ET: “Maybe [Sophie] has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

The Mean Girls star also gave fans an idea of what would be highly likely, if not guaranteed, in another film.

“I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie and Christine will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing,” she said.

‘Keep Sydney Sweeney out of Mamma Mia’

The prospect of Sydney Sweeney being involved has dampened some fans’ enthusiasm following her recent controversies.

On X, formerly Twitter, user @spicyroxxi shared a screenshot of a previous petition to “keep James Corden out of Wicked the movie”. They asked: “Can somebody start a petition like this to keep Sydney out of Mamma Mia?”

And it appears many shared the view, with more than 79,000 users giving their approval with a like.

Recently, as well as her Christy Martin biopic, Christy, flopping at the box office, Sweeney has faced backlash for her American Eagle jeans ad, which critics claimed featured undertones of racism and eugenics.

Prior to Christy‘s release, Sweeney was was asked about the reaction which she said “definitely was a surprise”.

Rather than address it head-on, Sweeney replied: “When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
