Heartstopper finale film Heartstopper Forever has recast Nick Nelson’s mum, Sarah, with Anna Maxwell Martin replacing Olivia Colman, as confirmed in a Netflix Tudum announcement.

Derek Jacobi has also been cast in an undisclosed cameo role in the film, which is planned for release later in 2026.

Explaining why Sarah needed to be part of the final chapter, creator and writer Alice Oseman said: “While in Season 3, we were able to tweak the story to avoid any appearance of Sarah, it felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces.”

Oseman added: “Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character.”

Reflecting on Colman’s time in the role, they said: “We are deeply grateful for Olivia’s beautiful performance as Sarah in Seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, through such iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan.”

Sarah’s return to Heartstopper

Colman played Sarah Nelson across seasons one and two, including key scenes around Nick coming out as bisexual. Sarah did not appear in season three, with the story adjusted to avoid the character’s on-screen presence.

Oseman also praised Maxwell Martin’s take on the role, saying: “We are overjoyed to welcome the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin into the role of Sarah for Heartstopper Forever.”

They added: “Anna perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot.”

What is Heartstopper Forever about?

The film will follow Nick and Charlie as they deal with their relationship becoming long-distance, with Nick getting ready for university and Charlie finding his independence at school.

Heartstopper Forever will be directed by Wash Westmoreland, taking over from Euros Lyn, with Oseman also indicating the finale will premiere after the release of their upcoming book on 2 July.

Heartstopper is a Netflix adaptation of Oseman’s graphic novels, celebrated for tender, affirming LGBTQ+ teen storytelling. Kit Connor publicly came out as bisexual in 2022 after relentless online speculation, while Yasmin Finney’s Elle has become one of the most prominent trans teen characters in mainstream UK TV in recent years.
