Kristen Stewart has shared how she “puked” on the set of her new film because a scene required her to “eat all day long”.

The sapphic icon made the comments about her role in Full Phil, directed by French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux, while publicising the film at Cannes Film Festival.

Full Phil is an absurdist comedy drama starring Woody Harrelson as a wealthy American industrialist and Stewart as his estranged daughter.

The pair attempt to reconnect on a trip to Paris, but French food, a 1950s horror film and a meddling hotel employee interrupt their plans.

Speaking to Deadline on 18 May, Stewart told of a scene that saw her character consume a large amount of decadent food from hotel room service and at a diner. However, she couldn’t make use of spit buckets, as is the norm in the industry, while shooting the scene because the takes were very long.

“I only puked once,” she shared. “It was when they had filled this cauliflower mash with butter and they were like, ‘There’s no butter. It’s all vegetal oil.’ And I was like, ‘Vegetal oil?’ Woody’s vegan and I was like, ‘You can smell the butter.’”

Harrelson interrupted, quipping that he would have been fine using a spit bucket. “I wouldn’t care,” he joked.

Stewart went on to say that they had “a very talented and willful French man making the food.”

She continued: “Our process means that I have to eat all day long. They wanted it to taste really good and reflect the French cuisine. And I was like, ‘I’m going to die. I’m not supposed to actually perish.’”

Despite the discomfort, however, Stewart enjoyed the challenge that came with filming the scene in that way.

“The eating’s cool because it’s nice to have obstacles, like kind of hurdles that you don’t think about when you’re running lines,” she said. “It’s a metaphor. It’s very symbolic. She’s a voracious bottomless pit, eating her feelings.”
