Rupert Everett has said he’s “almost crippled” after he “ruined” his body in the gym lifting weights in the 1980s and 1990s.

The gay actor, 67, said he was on a quest for a sculpted body in the gym earlier in his career but couldn’t “be bothered” to do things properly or safely.

He said: “I ruined myself. Now I’m almost crippled as a result.”

The My Best Friend’s Wedding star explained to The Guardian: “I could never be bothered to do all those things, like stretching, which were necessary for lifting weights, because your tendons get tighter and tighty.

“So boring. I didn’t do any of that. So now my demise will be musculoskeletal, I think.”

Before he decided to hit the gym, he explained he had some help from “two queens” who made him custom bodysuits. “They made me a false bottom, false calves, false shoulders, false everything,” he said, adding that he wore them “in everything”.

Everett recently returned to screens in Disney+ series Rivals and queer movie Madfabulous, which stars It’s A Sin actor Callum Scott Howells.

Rupert Everett controversies

Despite being gay, Rupert Everett has seen his fair share of backlash for his views on a handful of LGBTQ+ issues.

Despite identifying as transgender between the ages of six and 14, Everett said in 2016 that he thought it was “scary” that some parents were supportive of their children’s gender transition. He was also not supportive of hormone replacement therapy for trans youngsters.

The actor previously shared criticism of same-sex marriage in 2012, despite going on to marry his partner Henrique in 2024.

Everett said that it was “beyond tragic” that same-sex couples wanted the option to marry, when marriage was “so clearly a disaster”.

He also said he couldn’t “think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads” as “being gay was about wanting to do the opposite of the straight world”, though did argue same-sex couples should be able to raise children.
