Freddie Fraser has shared an update about returning to university as an out bisexual student, and his mum’s emotional comment has struck a chord with viewers.
In an Instagram Reel, the The Traitors star documented starting at City St George’s, University of London, where he is studying an MA in Broadcast Journalism. Fraser, 22, reflected on how different it feels to be open about his sexuality now compared with when he was younger.
“Doing a master’s at 22 and being bisexual has actually been such a blessing in disguise,” Fraser says, adding that the response to him coming out last month has been “amazing”.
Fraser also spoke about why being out felt harder at school. “When I was younger, and you go through school, you go through all these institutions, it’s a lot harder to come out, be who you want to be, ’cause you’re scared of being judged, or you’re scared to be bullied,” he says.
He went on to describe feeling more comfortable being open about his identity at university.
“To be so open with them about who I am, my identity and all that, without even feeling that they’re going to judge me. It’s A, progress, and B, I feel like I’ve reclaimed a part of myself that used to be so scared,” he says.
Mum says she was ‘petrified’
In the comments, Fraser’s mother, Kate, shared a message about how she felt when he first told her he was bisexual.
“As your mum, I’m so proud of you watching this Freddie… when you told me I was petrified… petrified that people might be mean to you, like when you was at school, and the thought of that broke my heart,” she wrote, adding: “I couldn’t have been more wrong,”
Kate continued: “Your friends have showed me that times have changed… and seeing you this happy honestly makes me the happiest mum on the planet.”
Fraser came out publicly in August when he went public with boyfriend Bailey Ramsden, and earlier this month he spoke about his relationship and coming-out journey, including how he met Ramsden.
