A new Tom Brady biography claims some of his University of Michigan teammates suspected he was gay until a fellow student said he overheard him having sex with a woman and repeated it around the team.
The anecdote appears in an excerpt from Lars Anderson’s biography, Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness. In Anderson’s telling, the speculation stemmed from Brady being “rarely seen with a girl” while he was focused on football.
What does the Tom Brady biography claim happened?
According to the excerpt, the moment unfolded late one evening in a West Quad hallway, when a student who worked in the athletic department walked past Brady’s room.
Anderson writes: “Hearing muffled noises inside Brady’s room, he stopped and put his ear close to the door.”
He continues: “There was no mistaking: Those were the breathless gasps of uninhibited desire emanating from a female voice. The sheets were shaking.”

The next day, the story had apparently turned into dorm gossip with a clear verdict. The excerpt says: “The next day, the student shared his findings with several Michigan players. ‘Guys’ he said, ‘Tom Brady is definitely into girls.’”
The account is presented as a second-hand anecdote within a sports biography, rather than something Brady has publicly addressed.
Why Tom Brady gay rumours keep resurfacing
Brady is a former NFL quarterback, best known for his long run with the New England Patriots and later the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, he won a record seven Super Bowl titles and has remained a high-profile celebrity figure.
He played college football at the University of Michigan before being drafted in 2000. Brady was married to Gisele Bündchen for 13 years, and he also previously had a child with actress Bridget Moynahan in 2007.
Sexuality-related jokes about Brady have also spilled into pop culture. In 2024, Julian Edelman confused the internet by joking he was “gay” for Brady during a roast moment that ricocheted online.
