Ben Affleck has said he wore “no prosthesis” for his full-frontal shower scene in Gone Girl, shutting down a long-running rumour about the 2014 thriller.

Asked about the moment in a Variety interview published this week, the 54-year-old actor replied: “I wore no prosthesis.”

Affleck also said he has only used a prosthetic once on film, during his role in the 2006 drama Hollywoodland. “I’ve only worn one in one film, Hollywoodland. It was a nose,” he said.

The scene in question comes late in Gone Girl. Amy (Rosamund Pike) returns home covered in blood, gets into the shower, and asks Nick (Affleck) to join her so they can talk. She then demands he strip completely to check he is not wired.

What happens in the Gone Girl shower scene?

Gone Girl was directed by David Fincher and adapted from Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel of the same name. Alongside Affleck and Pike, the cast includes Carrie Coon, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry and Emily Ratajkowski.

The film was a major box office success, taking around $370 million on a $61 million budget.

Affleck plays Nick Dunne, who becomes the prime suspect when Amy disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary, with the story’s tabloid frenzy and twist-heavy plotting helping turn it into a lasting pop culture reference point.

Affleck also spoke about Jennifer Lopez and awards

In the same interview, Affleck was asked why Jennifer Lopez has been “overlooked” for awards. “I’m biased. I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for what she can do,” he said.

He also shared his view of awards recognition more broadly: “But guess what? I don’t think you die and go to heaven, and God says, ‘This was the actual best picture in 1986.’ At the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of people voting on movie prizes.”

Other actors have also addressed prosthetics in high-profile nude scenes, including when Theo James confirmed a nude scene in The White Lotus used a prosthetic and when Drew Starkey confirmed to TIME he wore a prosthetic for full-frontal scenes in Queer.
