Hunter Schafer has shared that she underwent gender-affirming bottom surgery in December, describing it as “amazing” and adding: “I love it so much.”
In a new Elle interview, the 27-year-old transgender actor and model said: “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” as she reflected on what led her to the decision.
Schafer explained how she had tried for years to embrace a different idea of herself.
“Like I said, for a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it,” she said.
But she shared that after “being on that journey and finding yourself”, she now views her gender identity as “flatter”.
Schafer said: “I’m a woman. I’m a girl.”
The Euphoria star said her recovery at the beginning of the year came meant she was limited to 150 steps a day, “which is nothing”, she said.

Instead, she had friends and family visit her in a big apartment that she had rented, though she’s happy to be alone as “there are so many thoughts to think”.
Hunter Schafer’s rom-com dream
Schafer, best known for playing Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria, has built a career in fashion and hard-hitting roles, also including in Mother Mary and as Tigris in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
And while she has a number of roles coming up, including in Blade Runner 2099 and an as-yet untitled horror from A24, she has a dream of starring in a romantic comedy.
“I would just love to see a trans girl rom-com,” Schafer, who previously suggested she didn’t want to be labelled a “trans actress”, said. “I’ve been thinking about that for a while. I would like to make that happen.”
Hunter Schafer’s love life
As for her own romantic history, she has dated Spanish singer Rosalía, as well as Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike, who she was recently linked to again after fans believed he sang about her at his concert.
But Schafer says she hasn’t had a relationship last longer than two years, which she is hoping to achieve.
“I’ve heard the two-year mark is when it gets more like a partnership rather than some passionate whatever-it-is,” she said. “Something that feels more sacred and intentional.”
