Police in Bahawalnagar, Pakistan, have detained two suspects after a transgender person, known as Zoya, died from injuries sustained in an alleged attack.

Law enforcement said Zoya was attacked by four people on 23 October and died the following day. Police have registered a murder case against four suspects, and said two of them, reportedly brothers, were detained.

What do police say happened to Zoya?

UA.NEWS published an account saying Zoya was assaulted with sticks while travelling with her sister, Mehnaz Bano, to the DHQ district hospital.

Law enforcement shared Zoya had filed a complaint previously, against the people she named over harassment and violence, who had allegedly sent death threats too. The same police account said the suspects allegedly wanted a relationship with her and began harassing and threatening her after she refused.

Police said Zoya registered a complaint at the B Division police station about a month before the attack.

Trans community in Pakistan

Zoya spent several years at the Bahawalnagar district police administration’s office in a specialist post handling victims’ appeals, and she used the role to help deal with difficulties faced by the transgender community.

Pakistan has a visible khwaja sira and transgender community with a long cultural history, but trans people face high levels of discrimination and violence. The country’s 2018 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act is often cited as a landmark legal framework, though implementation and social acceptance vary significantly. In September 2022, a clash over Pakistan’s 2018 trans rights law highlighted how contested legal protections can become.
