Sadie Sink’s mystery Spider-Man role ‘spoiled’ at Brand New Day premiere

Sadie Sink’s long-rumoured “mystery” role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been revealed, as the film lands in UK cinemas and the secrecy around her casting starts to fall away.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton previously said there was a “very real reason” for the secrecy, adding that audiences wouldn’t be “mad at it”.
Obviously, there are spoilers ahead, so it may be better to stop scrolling now if you’d prefer not to see them!
After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that the Stranger Things star is playing Jean Grey, a member of the X-Men.
The movie doesn’t confirm her identity until over an hour into the runtime, according to Digital Spy, despite teasing her telekinetic abilities earlier.
Plot-wise, the first clear hint of Jean’s powers comes early, when her mind control is shown as during a tank crash scene, catching the interest of Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland).
When he starts getting too close, Jean breaks into Peter’s apartment, reads his letter to MJ, and threatens MJ’s safety if he does not stop pursuing her.
The film later has Jean take over MJ’s mind to trick Peter into thinking she remembers him. But when Jean is caught on camera, Peter tracks her down and discovers she is Jean Elaine Grey.
Spoilers and social media theories
The reveal was already being discussed around the premiere. In a red carpet interview clip, musician Steve Lacy said: “You know, what? Jean… I like Jean. She’s the villain, but there’s a reason to her madness.”
Film critic Siddhant Adlakha also weighed in via an X thread, writing: “Apparently someone ‘spoiled’ this on the red carpet tonight. Don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler, I promise,” adding: “Definitely wouldn’t call it a mystery – it’s not a piece of information anyone’s chasing, and learning it makes no difference to anyone or anything in the film.”
Adlakha added that the real “mystery” would be linked to Jean’s motive, rather than her identity. So, maybe this doesn’t spoil too much after all…
Anyway, fans were already pretty convinced Sink would be playing Jean Grey as the comic book character famously has red hair, just like the actress.
The character has not yet appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though was in Fox’s X-Men series, which ended with Dark Phoenix in 2019. She was first portrayed by Famke Janssen in the original X-Men trilogy, and by Sophie Turner as a younger version in the prequel movies.
It’s not yet been revealed how Sink will be used further down the line in upcoming MCU movies, however it has been confirmed that the X-Men will be joining as of Avengeres: Doomsday, releasing in December this year.
