US: Oregon attorneys to receive legal fees following gay marriage ruling

  • TwitterFacebookRedditEmail

Attorneys who fought for same-sex marriage in the US state of Oregon, will receive legal fees and court costs back after a ruling to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Attorneys in the state who worked with the one group of plaintiffs in the battle which led to same-sex marriage becoming legal in Oregon, will receive $133,567 (£80,000) in legal fees and court costs.

US District Judge Michael McShane this week approved the agreement to pay back the fees.

Another set of attorneys who worked with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in the state, have also reached an agreement, but need to finalise the amount.

US Federal law allows prevailing parties in civil rights lawsuits to seek attorney fees to cover their costs.
