Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman confirms he’s writing sequel

Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman has confirmed he is writing a sequel, contradicting claims that he would block plans for a follow-up film.

There has been much buzz about a follow-up to 2017 romance film Call Me By Your Name, an adaptation of Aciman’s novel of the same name, starring Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet.

Director Luca Guadagnino has all-but-confirmed that work has started on developing the follow-up film, while Hammer and Chalamet said they are both “1000 percent in” to reprise their roles as Oliver and Elio in the project.

André Aciman, who penned the original novel, this week revealed he is on board and is already penning a sequel.

“I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one.”

The writer confirmed on Twitter on November 3: “I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one.”

It is unclear if Aciman is writing a follow-up to his original novel, or whether he is directly working on the script for the second film.

The tweet was prompted by incendiary comments from screenwriter James Ivory, who adapted Aciman’s original novel to screen.

In an interview with The Film Stage, Ivory had claimed that Aciman thought a sequel was a “bad idea,” adding: “They can’t do a sequel, I think, without him being on board. It’s his characters and his story.”

Ivory has firmly ruled out working on the sequel, adding: “I don’t [have any involvement] and I wouldn’t want to be involved. I can’t imagine having to make Timothée Chalamet look 45.

“I mean, that would be horrendous and so fake looking if that’s what they are going to do!”

Speaking to IndieWire, Ivory spoke about his creative objections, explaining that fundamental to the original story was that Elio “might have had a disappointment with Oliver but you knew within a very short time he was going to have all kinds of a successful love life.”

Luca Guadagnino recently spoke about his vision for the second film.

The director named frequent collaborator Dakota Johnson, who he worked with on films A Bigger Splash and Suspiria, as his dream casting for the role of Oliver’s wife.

In a joint interview with the New Yorker, he told Hammer: “She has to be a New England kind of hoochie woman. You have, maybe, five children.”

He also suggested the follow-up would be set during the AIDS crisis.

A plot outline for the second film was also teased by actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Elio’s dad.

He told Far Out Magazine: “[Guadagnino] seems to think that we might be able to pick up the action a few years later, to see what’s happened to these characters and the choices they’ve made, and life after this particularly momentous summer for them all.

“But it sounds like something he’s serious about, and André Aciman is thrilled I think at the idea.”
