Grammy nominee SOPHIE, a trans woman, was misgendered on the red carpet at the annual music awards on Sunday (February 10).

DJ, singer and record producer SOPHIE was referred to using the wrong pronouns during an interview for the Recording Academy’s official pre-show coverage.

The 32-year-old musician from Glasgow, Scotland, was nominated for the Best Dance/Electronic Album for her debut 2018 LP Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, which was won by Justice’s Woman Worldwide.

Speaking to celebrity interviewer Dana Blair on the red carpet, SOPHIE discussed her album, explaining that her nomination “means that hopefully more people will be aware of what I do.”

SOPHIE, who has produced music for high-profile artists including Charli XCX and Madonna, was then asked about which musicians she is currently working with.

“SOPHIE lost her Grammy AND GOT MISGENDERED BY THE INTERVIEWERS IM DONE.”

“I’ve fallen into that trap before,” she responded, to which Blair said: “He’s like, ‘not doing it again.'”

The interview continued without SOPHIE or Blair commenting on the error.

Blair and SOPHIE have not responded to the incident on social media.

Social media users have criticised the Grammy Awards and Blair over the incident.

“OK SO THE GRAMMYS NOMINATED SOPHIE, A TRANS WOMAN, FOR BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE ALBUM, BROUGHT HER TO THE GRAMMYS, SNUBBED HER FROM HER AWARD, INTERVIEWED HER & MISGENDERED HER TO HER FACE? THAT’S SICK,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “F*ck the grammys for misgendering sophie.”

And a third person wrote: “SOPHIE lost her Grammy AND GOT MISGENDERED BY THE INTERVIEWERS IM DONE.”

LGBT+ stars dazzled at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, including lesbian rocker Brandi Carlile, who won three accolades and gave a rousing speech addressing misfits like her.

Queer artist Janelle Monáe, meanwhile, performed her track “Make Me Feel” at the awards ceremony, which details her love for both men and women.
