Kylie Minogue reveals she once wrote a song with Prince – and a demo might be floating around on cassette tape somewhere

Kylie Minogue and Prince

Kylie Minogue has revealed that she once wrote a song with Prince – and the track may still be out there somewhere on a lost cassette tape.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on his Apple Music show ahead of the release of her 15th studio album Disco on Friday (November 6), Minogue spoke about meeting the legendary musician, who died in 2016, in the early 1990s.

“Well, I had an almost dream come true, which was with Prince,” Minogue said. “I met him. As a 14-year-old, a hormonally charged music maniac, Prince is just… it.

“Then I went to see his show, God, early 90s at Earl’s Court – RIP Earl’s Court – and got to meet him afterwards.”

Kylie Minogue and Prince wrote a song together called ‘Baby Doll’ – but it was never recorded.

“I don’t know where I plucked up the courage from, but I said: ‘Ah, I’m making an album,'” Kylie Minogue continued.

“I don’t know what I said. I have no idea. This is before phones and stuff. I’m more gutsy than I kind of make out sometimes even to myself.”

Minogue said she “just kind of hung out” with Prince.

“I don’t even know what that means, but we hung out and he kind of put me on the spot a bit. He was like, ‘So where are your lyrics?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t…'”

After she wrote lyrics for Prince, the singer had his driver drop a cassette tape to Minogue’s house with a demo version of a song called ‘Baby Doll’.

Heartbreakingly, the duet never came to fruition, with Minogue revealing that her label at the time did not like the sound of Prince possibly “doing it all” and taking the production reins.

“That was my almost… we didn’t record it.

“I suggested it to my label and I think he would want it to do it all and they weren’t into that. That was that.

“I might’ve been kind of gutsy, but I wasn’t… I don’t know. I wasn’t sure enough of myself to say: ‘No.'”

Sadly, Minogue said she does not know where the cassette tape currently is, but it’s possible that it still exists somewhere – meaning that the Kylie and Prince duet may one day see the light of day after all.
