Spectacular new Battlefield 2042 trailer shows a devastated world wrecked by climate change

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 has been officially revealed in a brand new gameplay trailer.

As the title suggests, it brings the online multiplayer shooter to a near-future following the World War II theme of previous title Battlefield V.

With the world on the brink following shortages of food, energy and clean water causing a mass refugee crisis, Russia and the United States pull the world into a new war between failed nations.

Despite this, design director Daniel Berlin has claimed in an interview with IGN that the game does not offer political commentary on the current climate or refugee crisis. It is instead “purely a multiplayer game for us”.

The series is known for its huge multiplayer battles; in Battlefield 2042 up to 128 players will compete together on PC and the latest consoles for the first time.

Excitingly, real-time events will reshape the battlefield with cataclysmic impact – from the trailer it seems like this will include tornado storms and a space rocket taking off, among others.

Battlefield 2042 players will take on the role of Specialists, equipped with their own unique traits, special abilities and customisable loadouts. As is typical of the franchise, combat will take place both on-foot and in vehicles: from futuristic tanks to jet planes.

Battles will come in one of three flavours: All-Out Warfare will be the flagship war mode featuring 128 players, environmental hazards, dynamic weather, and the largest maps of the series.

Secondly, Hazard Zone will be a high stakes, squad-based mode that’s new for Battlefield. The third is yet to be announced, but will be a love letter to the series.

Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want – the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events,” promises Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager of developer DICE.

Oh, and there’s a robot dog!

Battlefield 2042 will be released on 22 October for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as Xbox One and PS4.

However, on previous consoles the maps will be smaller and only allow for 64 players. It will also retail for $59.99 instead of $69.99.

A full gameplay reveal is also coming on 13 June. Until then, check out the reveal trailer below and visit the official site.
