Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to reunite in ’emotional’ Neighbours final episode

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will reunite in the final ever episode of Neighbours, more than three decades since they left the soap opera.

Neighbours, which centres around the fictional Ramsay Street, began in 1985, but this year it was announced that the show would be ending for good in August, having been dropped by Channel 5.

Kylie and Jason, who left the series 1989 and 1988 respectively, played the two most iconic characters in Neighbours history – Scott and Charlene Robinson.

The couple’s wedding episode, aired in 1987, drew two million viewers in Australia, and nearly 20 million when it aired in the UK in 1988.

It had been rumoured that Kylie and Jason might be returning to Neighbours when the Herald Sun reported that they had been spotted filming at Pin Oak Court in Vermont South, a suburb of Melbourne.

The stars later dropped hints on their Instagram accounts, and on Sunday, 1 May, executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed the news, saying in a statement: “Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them.

“We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale. It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I’m sure it will be for our viewers.”

Fans were beside themselves after the news was confirmed, with one describing it as “the greatest announcement in TV history”, and another writing on Twitter: “Kylie and Jason are returning to Neighbours for the finale. Keep calm, everybody.

“Remember what we practiced in gay emergency training.”

Colin MacFarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland and Northern Ireland, tweeted: “Oh my days! Charlene is returning.

“I hope Brisbane has treated her well. Has being a Global Pop Icon changed her? And does she still have a perm? All will be revealed.”

The final episode of Neighbours will air in Australia on 1 August, 2022.
