Grimes weighed in on Twitter after her ex-boyfriend, the billionaire Elon Musk, agreed to buy it.

Grimes said there are a “lot of issues with Twitter” when it comes to “public mental health” ahead of Musk’s takeover of the social media platform.

In a recent interview with MIT artificial intelligence researcher Lex Fridman, she acknowledged that she perhaps isn’t the best person to comment on Twitter given her relationship to Musk, the father of her two children.

“I do think there are a lot of issues with Twitter in terms of the public mental health but due to my proximity to the current dramas, I honestly feel that I should not have opinions about this because, if Elon ends up getting Twitter, that is being the arbiter of truth or public discussion,” she said, according to Metro.

“That is a responsibility – I am not qualified to be responsible for that, and I do not want to say something that might, like, dismantle democracy.”

Grimes added that a negative focus on technology has resulted in people feeling ‘alienated’ from “wanting to care about technology”.

She added that she believes “we can fix a lot of our problems more easily” by using technology rather than “fighting the powers that be”.

Grimes also admitted to creating “fake Twitter accounts” in the past to debate with others on topics she felt like she couldn’t engage with on her main social media account.

“I, like, go into different algorithmic bubbles to try and like, understand,” she said. “I’ll keep getting in fights with people and realise we’re not actually fighting.”

Musk has agreed to buy Twitter for $44 billion (£34.5 billion). Grimes, meanwhile, is gearing up to release her new album Book 1.

The Canadian singer confirmed she had split from Musk in March after revealing that the pair had welcomed a second child.

Grimes and Musk began dating in 2018 and welcomed their first child, X Æ A-12, in 2020.

They broke up, bu tin March, Grimes revealed to Vanity Fair that they had reunited and welcomed their second child, Exa Dark Sideræl, via a surrogate in December 2021.

Shortly after the Vanity Fair feature was published, Grimes shared on Twitter that she and the Tesla billionaire had split again. She added that Musk remained her “best friend and the love of my life”.
