Virgin Island’s Millie comes out as a lesbian: ‘I don’t need to be ashamed’

Millie on Virgin Island

Virgin Island series two participant Millie comes out as a lesbian in Tuesday night’s (12 May) episode, in a heartwarming moment.

Millie is one of a handful of contributors on this year’s cast who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community, also including Ellen (who spoke to PinkNews about her own coming out journey) and Tegan. While she previously identified as bisexual, tonight’s episode will see Millie come out as a lesbian to the support and celebration of her co-stars and coaches.

In our exclusive preview clip, the islanders gather to say goodbye to Shelby, who worked with the group to explore their desires.

Millie bravely steps up to speak to the group, saying: “For years, I’ve always used ‘bisexuality’ cause I’m like, ‘Oh, well I like boys, you know? That’s kind of normal.'”

Her co-stars rally behind her as she struggles to continue.

She goes on: “Ok, I’m just going to say it: I think deep down, I’ve liked girls. I just thought I need to say it, otherwise I’ll be living this life of not being me.”

The experts and other participants cheer Millie on after her announcement, sharing their pride for her.

Speaking to camera afterwards, Millie says: “As hard as it was, I’m really glad I said it. It’s lifted a ton of bricks off my shoulders.”

Laughing after her special moment, she continues: “I don’t need to be ashamed. It’s ok to be a lesbian!”

Millie’s co-star Ellen previously told PinkNews that she struggled to come to terms with her own sexuality (she identifies as gay or queer) after spending time with a church.

She eventually came out as bisexual in 2023 to her family, before accepting she was not interested in men.

Virgin Island continues 12 May at 9pm on Channel 4
