Brighton Pride attendees given warning as weather to hit ‘unhealthy’ levels

If you’re venturing out to Brighton and Hove Pride this weekend, be sure to heed these weather warnings and bring protection.
Though Pride-goers are treated to headline performances from Raye and Diana Ross, weather reports warn attendees that they will need protection from the sun.
Over the weekend, Brighton is set to see “unhealthy” and “sensitive” high UV levels, according to a report from AccuWeather.
The UV index is a measure of ultraviolet radiation. The ranking starts at zero and can rise to 11+.
For Saturday and Sunday, the UV level is predicted to be seven.
The UV index would typically be around five and six during the summer; levels six and above require active protection.
Warnings detail that unprotected skin burns in 15 to 25 minutes, so protection is essential. Advice includes seeking shade during midday hours, covering up and wearing sunscreen.

Too much UV exposure can be harmful, increasing the risk of skin cancer by damaging DNA in skin cells. UV also plays a substantial role in skin ageing, contributing to wrinkles, as well as eye problems, including cataracts.
The NHS advises using sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or above and at least 4-star UVA protection.
It should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears, and head if you have thinning or no hair, ideally 30 minutes before you go out into the sun.
As a guide, adults should aim to apply about six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen if covering the entire body.
Saturday is the cooler day of the weekend, with sunny skies and a high of 24 degrees and 64% humidity.
Sunday is a bit hotter. Brighton is reported to hit highs of 27 degrees with 68% humidity
Additionally, if you are sensitive to pollen, be sure to prepare, as pollen levels will be high all weekend.
Brighton & Hove Pride is widely regarded as one of the UK’s largest Pride celebrations, typically centred on a city-wide parade and a ticketed festival in Preston Park.
