Harry Shum Jr breaks silence on Glee reboot as he says he’d ‘love’ to return

Harry Shum Jr played Mike Chang in Glee

Harry Shum Jr has said he would love to reprise his roles in both the newly ordered Glee reboot and HBO’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series, if schedules allow.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor, who is currently competing on Dancing With The Stars, said: “You know what? I love those two franchises,” before addressing the Crazy Rich Asians series specifically.

He said: “Obviously, the last of [Crazy Rich Asians] ended on the characters that Gemma [Chan] and I play, so I would love to try and find a way to make it work.”

Shum Jr played Charlie Wu in the 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon M Chu. He appeared in a mid-credits scene teasing Charlie’s love story with Astrid, played by Gemma Chan.

What’s happening with the Crazy Rich Asians TV series?

A Crazy Rich Asians series has been greenlit at HBO, set to be a sequel to the film.

Henry Golding, Constance Wu and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles as series regulars, while Wicked‘s Michelle Yeoh will return in a smaller role.

Shum Jr’s comments are likely to fuel hopes that Charlie and Astrid’s story will be picked up again, but it remains unconfirmed whether he will reprise the role in the TV series.

What we know about the Glee reboot so far

A Glee reboot has also been ordered, with Disney+ and Hulu greenlighting the project on 21 October. The announcement made no mention of which original cast members, if any, would return, however creator Ryan Murphy said he had spoken to a number of the OG cast.

Shum Jr, who played Mike Chang on Glee and appeared across the show’s run, said he is keen to continue if he can make it work. He said that although he’s “currently really, really busy now,” he “would love to keep continuing because I love those franchises.”

The reboot had been building momentum for weeks, before it was finally confirmed. Murphy said he had written a script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and that the people he had spoken to were enthusiastic about the idea.

Reports soon emerged that Rachel Berry star Lea Michele had signed up for the reboot, while Chord Overstreet and Heather Morris seemed to confirm their returns.
