Mindy Kaling teases ‘really funny’ Legally Blonde 3 – and reveals she got the job by asking Reese Witherspoon to ‘bend and snap’

Legally Blonde 3 writer Mindy Kaling gushed about collaborating with Reese Witherspoon on the highly-anticipated sequel.

On Tuesday (October 3) Kaling spoke to Good Morning America about quarantining, keeping busy and her involvement in Legally Blonde 3.

The actor, comedian, producer and writer said she was “nervous, because the [original] movie is so iconic”, but thought it would be great to see what Elle Woods is doing in her 40s, almost 20 years after the second movie came out in 2003.

She added: “And it’s been really funny to write. And I’m working on it with my friend Dan [Goor], and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”

Kaling and Witherspoon have previously worked on many other projects together, including A Wrinkle in Time in 2018 with Oprah Winfrey and in The Morning Show in 2019.

The Office star told GMA: “I’d been working with her on a couple movies and we’ve been friends for a while. And I have always quoted the movies to her.

Kaling also revealed that she was the “annoying friend” who would ask Witherspoon to “bend and snap” with her.

Witherspoon then told her that she would “really love to revisit the character” – and thankfully for all of us, she is.

Witherspoon, who plays the iconic and loveable Elle, announced Kaling had been hired to write the script for Legally Blonde 3 back in May.

She tweeted her excitement, saying: “I’m SOOO excited”

Fans were ecstatic about the team-up, with one joking: “If this doesn’t stop COVID, i don’t know what will.”

Other than Witherspoon, the Legally Blonde 3 cast is yet to be confirmed, however Jennifer Coolidge has been tipped to return as beautician Paulette Bonafonté Parcelle.

Coolidge told Entertainment Tonight: “If I’m asked to do it I’ll definitely be in there. I would love to play Paulette again.”

Luke Wilson, who played Elle’s husband, has also hinted he’s waiting to be asked.

“I’d love to do another one,” he told ET. “I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now.”
