Rapper Doechii has had a bumper year already, winning a Grammy that only two other women have won previously, as well as being named Billboard’s Woman of the Year.
Doechii was awarded the Grammy for best rap album, becoming the third woman in history to win that category after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B, and joined the ranks of stars like Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande in winning the Billboard award.
In a statement, Billboard said that Doechii had “bold creativity and impressive talent” and it’s clear that the fans agree.
But, as she continues to skyrocket to superstardom, people are want to know more about her, including her dating history and whether she’s married. Here’s the tea:
Is Doechii her real name?
Short answer, no. Doechii is a stage name that she adopted around when she was in the “sixth or seventh grade” but the rapper’s real name is Jayla Ji’mya Hickmon.
She released her debut song “Girls” on SoundCloud in 2016 under the username @Iamdoechii and thus, her persona was born.
Doechii previously told Vulture that she adopted the name in order “to become someone new” because she experienced a lot of bullying. Choosing a new name was a way of moving beyond those experiences.
“[The name] just came to me: Jaylah might’ve been getting bullied but I decided Doechii wouldn’t stand for that shit. My whole attitude was different. It stuck,” she said.
Is Doechii bisexual?
Doechii does identify as bisexual, previously coming out publicly in 2022 during an interview with GQ.
Doechii said she wasn’t always comfortable being out or talking about her sexuality: “I started becoming comfortable with it when I started getting more gay friends.”
“I always knew that I was queer, bisexual. But I didn’t really feel comfortable talking about it because nobody around me was gay. So, it’s not like I was hiding it but I also wasn’t fully embracing it.”
Is Doechii married?
No, at least, we don’t have any information to suggest that Doechii is married or that she has been married in the past. If she reveals she got hitched, you’ll hear it here first.
Does Doechii have a girlfriend?
Although she is not married, Doechii revealed in October 2024 that she was “with a woman”, implying that they were together in a romantic capacity though she never used the term girlfriend explicitly at that time.
At the time, she told Gay Times: “I think I’ve always been gay. I always knew I was gay. I’m currently bisexual. I am with a woman now, and I have always known that I loved women. I’ve been very, very aware from an early age.”
In a December 2024 interview with The Breakfast Club, she was asked outright if she had a girlfriend and Doechii said: “Yeah, it’s wonderful.”
Doechii hasn’t mentioned her girlfriend since then, nor did she reveal who this person was, and there have never been any public sightings of the two of them together.
Doechii has dated others in the past, with some of her songs referencing past relationships, particularly in ‘Denial Is A River’, which is about her ex-boyfriend cheating on her with a man.
She told The Breakfast Club that she didn’t have a problem with her ex being bisexual, it was the lying and the cheating that rubbed her the wrong way: “[His sexuality was never the problem. I think the problem was that you cheated on me.”
