Fired Mandalorian actress Gina Carano thanks ‘Good Samaritan’ Elon Musk after settling with Disney

Actress Gina Carano has settled her lawsuit against Disney and LucasFilm, funded with the help of billionaire Elon Musk, after she was fired from Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian for controversial comments.

Former MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano, who portrayed Alderaanian warrior Cara Dune in the Disney+ series, was dropped in 2021 after she faced accusations of antisemitism following a social media post in which she compared being a Republican in the United States to being Jewish during the atrocities of the holocaust.

The post, which was shared to her Instagram story, read: “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors… even by children.

“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbours hate them simply for being Jews.

“How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

This followed an earlier incident where Carano was accused of transphobia when she added “boop/bop/beep” to her Twitter profile, after fans asked if she would display her pronouns as an act of trans solidarity.

She denied transphobia and insisted: “Beep/bop/boop has zero to do with mocking trans people, [100 per cent] to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes.”

LucasFilm announced her firing in February 2021, with a spokesperson stating she was no longer employed by the company and there were “no plans for her to be in the future”, adding her “social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable”.

In response to her firing, Carano sued Disney and LucasFilm, claiming sexual discrimination and wrongful dismissal because she said the companies violated California labour laws prohibiting employers from policing employees political views reprimanding them based on political speech.

She sought $75,000 (approximately £59,380) in damages from the companies and also asked to be reinstated on the popular Srar Wars show.

The lawsuit was bankrolled by X owner Musk who previously pledged to fund legal action for any users who faced pushback from employers over their activity on the his social media platform, which was formerly known as Twitter.

On Thursday (7 August), Carano shared a statement following the settlement between herself, Disney and LucasFilm on X.

She stated had come to an agreement with the companies – the details of which have not been made public – and it was “the best outcome for all parties involved”, adding: “I hope this brings some healing to the force.”

“I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, @elonmusk a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit. Thank you Mr. Musk and @X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return,” she wrote.

“I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome.

“I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud.

“I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”

Carano added: “Yes, I’m smiling.”

A Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement provided to Variety, “The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies.

“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.

“With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
