Joe Locke wins first Emmy for Heartstopper role: ‘So deserved!!!’

Heartstopper star Joe Locke is officially an Emmy Award winner.

The 22-year-old actor won the Outstanding Lead Performer in a Preschool, Children’s or Young Teen Program category at last night’s (2 March) Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, for his role as queer teen Charlie Spring in Netflix series Heartstopper.

Joe Locke beat his Heartstopper co-star Kit Connor to the award, as well as Time Bandits star Lisa Kudrow, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actor Jude Law, Goosebumps: The Vanishing star David Schwimmer, Malory Towers actress Danya Griver and The Primrose Railway Children actress Nina Toussaint-White.

Connor previously beat Locke to the accolade in 2022.

Heartstopper itself was also nominated for three accolades, including Outstanding Young Teen Series, Outstanding Writing for a Young Teen Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Live Action Series.

It won the Outstanding Writing for a Young Teen Series gong for ‘Journey’, the emotional fourth episode of its third season, which sees Locke’s character Charlie seek treatment for anorexia and OCD.

Alice Oseman, who created the Heartstopper graphic novels and adapted the novels for Netflix, was on hand to collect the accolade. She shared a photo of herself, taken by Heartstopper producer Patrick Walters, grinning as she clutched her Emmy Award.

Volume Six of the Heartstopper novels, which will wrap up the plot of Nick and Charlie’s sweet love story, is due for release on 2 July.
