Who is Netflix’s Unchosen star Fra Fee and is he gay in real life?

Irish actor Fra Fee plays on-the-run murderer Sam in Netflix‘s psychological cult thriller Unchosen. The show premiered on 21 April to mixed reviews.

The 38-year-old actor plays Sam in the new six-part drama. It follows a religious sect in the UK, with Fee’s Sam escaping from prison and saving the daughter of a group member, before things take a dark turn.

In the Netflix series, Fee’s character Sam has an affair with married Rosie (played by Molly Windsor) however when she learns his true identity she distances herself from him. In turn, Sam grows close to her husband Adam (Asa Butterfield) who is made a group elder.

He eventually tries to blackmail Adam, who is struggling to hide his same-sex attractions, and secretly films Adam when he gives in to temptation and gets down on his knees. Sam tells Adam that he felt he had to let Adam do that to keep him safe in the group.

What has Fra Fee starred in before?

Before Unchosen, in 2024 Fee appeared in BBC series Lost Boys and Fairies as Andy. The series follows Andy and his performance artist partner Gabriel (Slow Horses’ Sion Daniel Young) as they prepare to be fathers and adopt a child. However, Gabriel’s own history of childhood trauma is unearthed and threatens to derail the adoption process.Alongside his starring role in Lost Boys and Fairies, Fra Fee’s acting career is rather extensive.

In 2025, he appeared in Apple TV+ series Prime Target alongside Leo Woodall. Fee and Woodall’s characters developed a romance, with fans enjoying their heated kissing scene.

As well as that, Fee has worked across film, TV and theatre. He is perhaps best known for his Marvel Cinematic Universe role Kazi in the Disney+ show Hawkeye

Fee’s early film role was as Courfeyrac in Tom Hooper’s 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables.

He also starred in Animals in 2019, Boys From County Hell in 2020 and Cinderella in 2021.

In the world of theatre, Fee played the role of Michael Carney in Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman at the West End’s Royal Court Theatre, directed by Sam Mendes. For his role in the show, Fee won the 2018 WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play.

His theatre career is also impressive, dating back to 2009 and including shows like Dirty Dancing, The Last Five Years, Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story, Cabaret andKing Lear.


Is Unchosen‘s Fra Fee gay in real life?

Fra Fee identifies as gay. He publicly shared his sexuality in 2020 with a post to X (formerly Twitter) about his love for RuPaul’s Drag Race

“As a gay man, I am very ashamed to say that this series of #RuPaulsDragRace has been the first I’ve properly watched from beginning to end,” he wrote.

“EVERYONE! It is quite simply ESSENTIAL viewing for ALL – my heart is FULL!”

Fee is in a relationship with EastEnders actor and singer Declan Bennett. They got married in 2024.
