Gala dinner and awards for LGBT black community
A ceremony will be held next month to honour those that have made a difference in the lives of black LGBT people in the UK.
The event, organised by the Black Gay Men’s Advisory Group, will take place on 7th April. It will be hosted by Cyril Nri from This Life and The Bill.
Awards will be given for advocacy, health promotion, communications, community development, arts and club of the year.
Rob Berkeley, Chair of BGMAG, said “These awards are an opportunity to say thanks to those that make our lives better, the politician, the counsellor, the artist, the DJ or the club promoter.”
These are the first awards that have been held since 2003. Black Gay Men’s Advisory Group will be re-launched as an independent organisation at the awards.
Nominees include Stephen K Amos, the black comedian who recently made a film about his experience of coming out, the Stop Murder Music Campaign and John Amaechi, the first ever professional basketball player to come out of the closet.
Also nominated are Lorna G, singer, DJ and star of Babymother, and Jide Macaulay, founder of a gay and lesbian welcoming church in Nigeria.
More unsung work is also recognised as youth workers, counsellors, writers, photographers and community workers are also in line for honours.
The clubs that have been nominated are Blessence, Bootylicious, Chocolate Lounge, Club Caribana, Fruit Machine, and Queer Nation.
Sponsors and partners are National African HIV Prevention Programme, Terence Higgins Trust, Mayor of London, Metropolitan Police Service, Pace, UK Black Pride, Tha Sistahood, Rukus!, Ukblackout.com, Heaven, and Men of Colour Magazine
