New on Amazon Prime in May 2021: every new movie and TV show coming to the platform this month

The Underground Railroad, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, P!NK documentary and series Solos are all heading to Amazon Prime Video this May.

Amazon Prime Video is releasing an eclectic mix of new film and TV content in May 2021.

This includes a new series from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins about an escaped slave named Cora making her way to freedom on a literal railroad, a star-studded anthology series Solos and a documentary on one of the world’s biggest popstars, P!NK.

The films and shows will all be available to stream for free as part of a Prime Video subscription, which costs £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year and comes with a 30-day free trial.

The biggest release this month is 10-part series The Underground Railroad, with all episodes dropping on 14 May.

The series is set in an alternate timeline to the Underground Railroad which in reality worked as a hidden route that helped enslaved Black people escape to freedom in the early to mid-1800s

Instead it’s an actual railroad complete with engineers, conductors, tracks and tunnels and Cora, an enslaved Black woman in Georgia, joins newcomer Caesar in an effort to ride the subterranean train to freedom.

It’s directed by Barry Jenkins, best known for his Oscar-winning film Moonlight and is based on the novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead.

It will be joined by another Prime Video original series, Solos, starring Morgan Freeman, Uzo Aduba, Helen Mirren, Anne Hathaway, Constance Wu, Dan Stevens, Anthony Mackie and Nicole Beharie.

The plot of the seven-part series is being kept tightly under wraps – there isn’t even a trailer yet – but we do know the stories are “each from a different perspective and moment in time – that illuminate that even during our most seemingly isolated moments, in the most disparate of circumstances, we are all connected through the human experience”.

The upcoming anthology series will premiere on the streaming service from 21 May.

Also being added exclusively on 21 May is a documentary following one of the world’s biggest popstars, P!NK.

Entitled P!NK: All I Know So Far, it follows the performer as she prepares to embark on a sold-out world tour while trying to balance being a mom, a wife, a boss and a performer.

The documentary mixes footage from the road, behind-the-scenes interviews and personal material as audiences are given a rare glimpse behind the curtain of the circus she calls life.

The first ever live-action Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu is also joining the streaming service this month.

It stars Ryan Reynolds in a surprising turn as the voice of the cute title character and follows a former Pokémon Trainer, Tim Goodman who attempts to uncover the mysterious disappearance of his father, Harry.

Other highlights heading to the streaming service this May includes Pitch Perfect 2 which sees the Barden Bellas head to the Acapella World Championship.

There’s also Tim Burton’s musical slasher Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the Michelle Williams-fronted drama All the Money in the World and John Wick: Chapter 2 starring Keanu Reeves.

To watch all of the new content you can sign up for a free 30-day trial on Amazon here. Once your trial is up you can cancel it or continue to pay £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year.
