Disney has confirmed The Princess Diaries 3, and the millennials of the internet are going wild.

There have long been rumours of a follow up to the 00s classic and its sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which went into overdrive in recent weeks after Anne Hathaway said she’d be up for a return.

On Wednesday (16 November), The Hollywood Reporter confirmed a third film is finally going ahead.

It’s not yet known whether the stars of the first two films, including Julie Andrews, Chris Pine, and Hathaway in what was her debut feature film role, will be returning.

Fans have been quick to share their pure joy at the announcement, while also warning that Disney can “keep it” if the original cast aren’t involved.

“A therapist can’t help me but a Princess Diaries 3 film with the return of the old cast sure as hell will,” one fan wrote.

“Need Disney to cut a big check and pay Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews and Chris Pine whatever they have to in order to make them come back for The Princess Diaries 3 this is not a joke this is my life,” another said.

The Princess Diaries follows Hathaway’s shy and unpopular teenage character Mia Thermopoli, as she learns that she is heir to the throne of the European country of Genovia.

Julie Andrews plays Mia’s estranged grandmother Clarisse and current queen of the country, who gives Mia ‘princess lessons’ in a hope of training her up and encouraging her to accept her role as princess.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Hathway does not yet have a deal to return for the film, though the actor, also known for her role as Andrea in The Devil Wears Prada, has publicly endorsed the film coming back.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight just a few weeks ago, Hathway said that she would be keen for the reboot.

“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” she said. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

Andrews, however, has said “it depends on the story” on whether she would make a return.

“I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know. It depends what the story is,” she said. “If they can come up with something that would be wonderful, if not there would be other things.”

While some fans have demanded the return of Hathaway and co, others have simply stated who should be “banned” from the film — including James Corden.

Others have theorised on potential storylines if Hathway wasn’t to make a return, such as Mia’s vice principal Geraldine Gupta, played by Sandra Oh, finding out that she is also a princess.

Another fan simply demanded that any revival includes another Kelly Clarkson bop like “Breakaway”.

The film is currently being written by screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji, though a release date is yet to be set.
