Jason Donovan to play G-A-Y
80s heart throb Jason Donovan is to follow in the footsteps of his Neighbours wife and play at legendary London nightclub G-A-Y tomorrow night.
The performance marks a new high in the 38-year-old Australian’s love-hate relationship with the gay community.
Donovan caused a tabloid storm in 1992, suing The Face magazine for alleging he was gay.
The soapstar-turned-pop star won the case, but the fact that he sued over an allegation of homosexuality caused outrage in the gay community, and his recording career collapsed.
Donovan had shot to fame playing Scott Robinson in hit Australian soap opera Neighbours.
Along with his on-screen wife, Charlene Mitchell, played by Kylie Minogue, he became a household name in the UK, which was in the grip of Neighbours fever.
Some episodes of the show were recording 15 million viewers.
Donovan launched a hugely successful pop career under the management of Stock, Aitken Waterman.
Between 1998 and 1993 he had 17 hit singles in the UK, including several number ones.
His easy Australian charm and blond, tanned good looks made him a favourite with gay men.
In recent years Donovan has carved out a career in musicals, starring in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
to critical acclaim.
His appearance in the most recent series of ITV reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! has brought him back to the attention of a wider audience.
Donovan is re-releasing his most successful hit, Too Many Broken Hearts, later this month, and is appearing at G-A-Y to promote the single.
