Bush daughter to write AIDS book
Jenna Bush is to write a book for teenagers about AIDS after working as a UNICEF ambassador.
The 25-year-old daughter of President George Bush and First Lady Laura has worked as an intern for the UN organisation since the Autumn of last year.
Her book will focus on the life of a teenage single mother who is HIV+
Ms Bush, who with her twin sister Barbara had something of a reputation as a party girl in the early days of her father’s Presidency, has in recent years devoted herself to education and charity work.
Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope will be published by Harper Collins later this year.
Ms Bush, who is currently teaching at a shelter in Panama as part of her UNICEF internship, said:
“I have been inspired by my work with adolescents in Central and South America.
“These young people have faced extreme hardships and exclusion but are strong in spirit and have an incredible will to succeed.
“Through their stories it is my hope to motivate young Americans to increase their awareness of other young people around the world: to learn about the challenges they face, how they triumph over adversity, and to become involved in helping them.”
It is thought publishers bid in excess of $300,000 (£156,000) for the rights to the book.
“We were very moved by Jenna’s passion for this project,” said Susan Katz, president of HarperCollins Children’s Books.
“Her message in this book is about hope, involvement, and inclusion, told through one teenager’s story of survival and strength.”
