A trans actress in the US has turned up at a prison to greet a prisoner who killed a man allegedly in self-defence against a hate crime.

Laverne Cox, star of Orange is the New Black, turned up to prison to meet trans woman CeCe McDonald as she was released from prison almost a year ahead of her scheduled release date.

Cox has campaigned for the release of McDonald, who was sentenced to second degree manslaughter after allegedly defending herself against a racist and transphobic attack.

She was sentenced to 41 months in prison but was released almost a year before she was due to be.

The TV star is also working on a documentary titled “Free CeCe” to draw attention to the cause.

She last week made the headlines after giving a succinct and frank answer to invasive interview questions about her transition and gender reassignment surgery.
