Madonna has caused controversy among her gay fans for praising Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ā€“ who passed Section 28 and opposed LGBT rights.

The late Conservative PM remains controversial among LGBT people for passing Section 28 ā€“ which banned the ā€˜promotionā€™ of homosexuality in schools, as well as for her approach to the AIDS crisis.

Thatcherā€™s former Health Secretary, Lord Norman Fowler, told PinkNews last year that Baroness Thatcher warned him against becoming the ā€œminister for AIDSā€ due to his work on HIV/AIDS.

However, pop singer Madonna seemed unaware of the controversy she was wading into when she posted a picture of the former PM on Instagram, with the caption: ā€œThank you Margaret Thatcher! #unapologetic <3 #rebelheartā€

After criticism, the gay icon swiftly deleted the post.

Some of her fans wrote:

However, she appears to have won back a fan ā€“ in the form of former Tory MP Louise Mensch.

The ex-MP wrote: ā€œMadonna back in my good books.ā€

Madonna is well-known for her gay fanbase and is a strong supporter of LGBT rights.

She recently joined Grindr to chat to a number of fans about her new album.

She previously caused controversy by claiming that gay rights are ā€œway more advancedā€ than womenā€™s rights.
