Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy celebrates queer ‘love and resilience’ with immaculate Met Gala look
Dan Levy invented homosexuality as he made his 2021 Met Gala debut with an outfit that made a powerful statement about the LGBT+ community.
The Schitt’s Creek star gave his take on “American Independence” by throwing on a billowing blue Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson and Cartier costume.
Joining the likes of Lil Nas X, who served not one, not two, but three immaculate Met Gala outfits that would make Lady Gaga shed a single tear, the 38-year-old took the Costume Institute’s biggest night of the year to the next level.
Mixing pastel hues of blue, green and pink with diamonds, the top also featured a stunning portrait of a queer couple kissing featuring on his chest inspired by the work of American artist and AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz.
Levy collaborated with Anderson to craft the costume that celebrates the “resilience and the love and the joy” of the LGBT+ community.
Dan Levy is a ‘gay superhero’, says Jonathan Anderson
Speaking to Vanity Fair before the event, Dan Levy opened up about what attending the event means to him.
With the theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” in mind, the director said: “I had asked Jonathan if he would be into dressing me just because I love his perspective on fashion and thought that he’d be a really great person to collaborate on this.
“He’s just so thoughtful, unexpected and artful in his approach to what he wants to say and with the clothes that he designs.
Thankfully, Levy reflected, Anderson said yes and curated an intricate dotted with beading and complex embroidery that pays tribute queer art. Anderson told the magazine that Levy is his “gay superhero”.
“Through his comedy,” Anderson said, “he is able to knock down cultural barriers.
“We just wanted to make something that allows him to make queer love visible and we found that through the seminal works of David Wojnarowicz.”
Going to the Met Gala for the first time is intimidating enough, let alone going to one amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – and even Dan Levy was nervous about attending.
“I’m a pretty introverted person, and I tend to avoid big parties,” he said, “so this is really taking a big step out of my comfort zone.”
“And I just keep saying to everybody: ‘I don’t know anyone there. Am I just going to be that person in the corner that’s just watching people and not talking to anyone?’
“But I’ve been assured by friends of mine who have gone that it is a far more kind of celebratory safe space than the intimidating world that I have been creating in my head.”
He even spoke with Met Gala co-host Amanda Gorman before the fashion function to help alleviate his fears. “I chatted with a little with Amanda about both of our nerves being new to the game,” he said.
“And we kind of said that if all else fails, we’ll just hold each other and get through it together.”
As skittish as Dan Levy was before attending the event, he knew that his Schitt’s Creek character, David Rose, would have sold both his kidneys to score a ticket to it.
“Absolutely nobody would want a Met Gala invitation more than sweet David Rose,” the comedian said. “Just desperate for it.”
